Willemoes and the WreckOngoing
Annebjerg Stræde 1, 4500 Nykøbing Sj
The square in Ringsted is centrally located in the city. Narrow streets spread out, giving space in the middle.
The old town hall at Torvet already in the 1700th century hid St. Bendt's Church, and on the opposite side of the square was Hotel Postgården from 1747.
Over time, the square was surrounded by large buildings on three sides. Hotel Casino from 1887, Central, which was in front of the old town hall, from 1890. And on the corner towards Søgade, the Stock Exchange was built in 1897.
In 1934, the buildings that overshadowed the church were demolished. It gave way to the current Ringsted Town Hall from 1938. The town hall was still centrally located, but no longer overshadowed St. Bendt's church.
The square has many possibilities. Historical processions, city anniversaries, royal visits, market days, flower boxes, newsagents, hot dogs, public toilets, car parks. And nowadays rainwater collection.
At the same time, the square contains many challenges. Appearance? Function? Application?
Torvet has always been controversial.
Traffic has been diverted from one side to the other and back again. The growing number of cars made Torvet a parking lot for a long time.
The ring sites have always had mixed attitudes towards Torvet. And the local newspapers have given a lot of column space to strong opinions about Torvet's layout and function.
Perhaps Torvet's function has simply changed over time?
At least one thing is certain – Torvet has been rearranged many times.
Have we seen the last one?
The exhibition can be viewed Ringsted Museum during the museum's opening hours the rest of 2024.
