Occupied and liberated Sorø

Possessed and liberated

Occupied and liberated – Sorø 1940-45

On the very evening that the German occupying forces occupied Denmark on 9 April 1940, a blackout was ordered so that German-enemy aircraft could not navigate over the country in the dark. When the message of freedom sounded on the evening of May 4, 1945, people's spontaneous reaction was to tear down blackout curtains from windows and put candles in the windowsills. End the 5 dark years. Denmark was free again.
In the special exhibition at Sorø Museum, there are stories about life during the occupation with a focus on e.g. resistance movement, plane crashes, rationing and chanting. See also the tragic story of 4 young resistance fighters who were killed by their own on May 5, 1945.

The exhibition can be seen until 12 May 2024 in the museum's opening hours.
