Tour: Bakkekammen – Better Building Practices quarter

Entrance at Bakkekammen 45

Bakkekammen 45 was built by Marius Pedersen. He was one of the pioneers behind Better Building Practices. Come inside his home and on a tour of the neighborhood.

Marius Pedersen has designed 10 of the houses on Bakkekammen, a street close to the fjord in Holbæk.

He was, together with i.a. Ivar Bentsen, prominent proponent of the Better Byggeskik movement.
On a walk around neighbourhoods, we hear about the ideas behind Better Building Practices and what characterizes this architectural direction. We look into the garden of Bakkekammen 40, which is one of Ivar Bentsen's main works from 1917, and end by visiting Bakkekammen 45, built by Marius Pedersen in 1929. Here he lived and worked until his death in 1965. The widow became lived in until 2007, after which the house was converted into Denmark's only interior museum for Better Building Design.

The house is untouched with original furnishings and color choice on the walls and doors, incl. the dining room wallpaper designed by the widow Emma Pedersen for the house.
In the basement of the house is a small exhibition about Better Building Practices.

The plot was formerly an orchard, and some of the old fruit trees still stand in the lavish garden behind the house. In 2022, the front garden was brought back to its original expression.

There is only access to the Bakkekammen via guided tours. It is necessary to buy a ticket in advance. The ticket also covers entrance to Holbæk Museum on the same day.
