The time travel is a 13,5 meter long man-high frieze. It winds around in hallways and up the stairs here in the listed rooms on Chr. 4's old inn. With beautiful scenes, scenes and important people, we try to answer why there is a city here in the middle of Zealand, and why it is quite special.

We start by visiting Brommekulturen in one of the final phases of the ice age (approx. 11.400 BC - approx. 10.500 BC). This is followed by the Middle Ages with the Hvideslægtens establishment of church and monastery and we end in the Sorø of the Enlightenment. Along the way, you will meet Danish kings and queens and learned men who have left their mark on both Sorø and Denmark.

The time travel in Sorø is illustrated by the renowned artist Erik Petri. Petri manages with its simple stroke to appeal broadly to both children and adults.

Objects for stories in the exhibition

The creatures of darkness

In the dark we can sense but not see clearly. It can arouse fearful suspicions, and especially when the wind shakes and the door creaks, we can sense the presence of something. We are looking for an explanation for the inexplicable, and over time, trolls, witches, bog wives, elves and even dragons have been blamed for a little of everything in Sorø and the surrounding area. As humans, we have the urge to control our world, and therefore rituals, superstitions, and warnings over time have helped us tackle the hardships of life and the beings of darkness. In the exhibition, you can meet some of them, face your fears in the darkroom, hear legends from the local area and find traces of superstition and the creatures of darkness in the farmhouse. The exhibition is family-friendly, and you are very welcome to see with your hands.

Citizenship & Klunketid - Interior exhibition at Sorø Museum

What did the living rooms of the bourgeoisie look like 100 years ago? You get a glimpse into the ornate living room, where sofa and trinkets form the framework of the housewife's primary residence. Then you can visit the master bedroom, where ashtrays and naughty French postcards testify to the man's more outgoing life.

BS Ingemann and the golden age

BS Ingemann became an associate professor of Danish at Sorø Academy in 1822. In a house southeast of the Academy's main building, he lived the rest of his life with his wife Lucie. The couple gathered many cultural figures in their homes during the period we now call the Danish golden age. Among them, HC Andersen, who found refuge in the period at Slagelse Latin School with the hated principal Meisling.

It was in Sorø that Ingemann wrote a number of his well-known historical novels and poems. You can see some of the couple's belongings, including books written by Ingemann.

Chr. 4's inn

Welcome to Chr.4's inn and enjoy a refreshment.

Sorø Museum is housed in buildings that were originally built as an inn by Chr. 4. It is not possible to create an inn as it originally looked as there are no drawings and pictures of it. Instead, the inn is inspired by other similar buildings and 1600th-century preserved interiors.

There is free access to the inn.
