Tour at Bakkekammen 40

The house is normally closed to the public, but today it is open for a special tour of Bakkekammen 40, an incredibly well-preserved villa with unique details.

The Grosserervilla at Bakkekammen 40 is the crowning glory of the area in Holbæk, which today stands as the heartland of the Better Building Practices movement.

The listed property from 1917 is considered one of the period's and not least architect Ivar Bentsen's main works. Ivar Bentsen was one of the driving forces in the architecture movement Better Construction, which worked to elevate Danish building culture.

In 2017-2018, Realdania By & Byg restored the mighty villa, which is incredibly well preserved with beautiful details such as Meissen porcelain tiles, cabinetry, infill doors and historicist paint coats.

The property, which is currently rented out for residential purposes, includes a garage, stable building, carriage gate and the 5.000 square meter protected garden, which is typically currently laid out symmetrically around an axis.

Architect Anna Grønvaldt Rønsow talks about the Bedre Byggeskik architecture, as expressed in the villa, and about Realdania By & Byg's restoration.
The tour is peppered with anecdotes about the time in 1917-18, when the house was built for the city's grocers, who moved into the 600 square meters with 'mansion & servants'.
