Learn more about Karl Bovin. Museum curator at Museum Sønderjylland, PhD Jens Tang Kristensen talks about the painter at Odsherreds Kunstmuseum.
In 1932, the socially committed artist group Corner held its first exhibition in a disused shop on the corner of Vester Voldgade and Studiestræde in inner Copenhagen. Among the initiators of the group was one of the most distinctive figures in 20th-century Danish art, Karl Bovin.
In the lecture we will hear more about why and how Karl Bovin has been undeservedly marginalized in Danish art history. This may seem strange, since in addition to being one of the central figures in the circle around Corner, he was also close to the abstract artists who gathered around Asger Jorn and the magazine Helhesten, both of which were central events in the lead-up to the internationally famous Cobra movement.
At the beginning of the Corner group's existence, Karl Bovin and his comrades often visited Henry Heerup in Gothersgade, before he moved to Hvidovre and Rødovre. In addition, Bovin was close to the archaeologist and later the National Antiquities Inspector PV Glob, who was also one of Jorn's closest friends. Bovin thus came along on all of Glob's archaeological expeditions to Bahrain, from where he painted countless pictures of the unspoiled landscapes and the Arab pearl fishermen. We will therefore look at the art of Bovin and his colleagues and thus follow in his footsteps from North Jutland and Odsherred to the Copenhagen taverns and Bahrain.
