ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The smell of bonfires and food spreads in and around Højbyen when we finally and for the sixth time hold the Kalundborg Medieval Festival in 2025!

It will be a blast of a festival, and the square will be teeming with clowns, knights, musicians and traders, and in the many stalls you can find all kinds of delicacies.

Look forward to fantastic fire shows, music and theater and let the children play and be creative in the family area.

All the performers live in the camp by the square, and you are welcome to take a look inside.

Kalundborg Medieval Festival is a historical festival which takes place right where major important events took place in the Middle Ages - namely in and near Højbyen in Kalundborg.

The festival was first held in 2015 and has only grown in size since then. The last festival was held in 2023, where around 5.000 happy guests passed by.

Kalundborg Middelalderfestival is a collaboration between Museum Vestsjælland, Kalundborg Municipality, group of priests and parish council at Our Lady's Church, local associations, businesses, voluntary and charitable institutions and the local press

THE STORY OF THE FOUNDATION OF KALUNDBORG

Kalundborg was founded in 1167 by Esbern Snare. He was the first person to lay the foundation stones for what we today call Højbyen in Kalundborg, where the medieval festival takes place. Esbern Snare was the brother of Bishop Absalon and foster brother of Valdemar the Great. At this point in history, all three brothers build castles in different cities in Denmark – Absalon in Copenhagen, Valdemar the Great in Vordingborg and Esbern Snare in Kalundborg. At the Kalundborg Medieval Festival we celebrate Esbern Snare's founding of Kalundborg with theatre, music and clowning on the ruins and the old Kalundborg. Take city walks in the area and learn more about Højbyen's history and watch our fantastic play that tells the story of Esbern Snare and the founding of Kalundborg exactly where it took place in 1167.
