Carmen Curlers – the dream factory

Carmencurler is put in the hair

A student-activating teaching course that, with its starting point in 1960s Denmark, focuses on welfare, consumption, equal rights, gender, the body and advertising.

"A new woman in 10 minutes." It was one of the things Carmen Curler promised women and their husbands. Advertisements are often a picture of the times, showing the norms and ideals of the time. And Carmen Curlers sold dreams both to those who bought the factory's products, but also to the many thousands of women who came to work at the factory.

The story of Carmen Curlers is a story of entrepreneurship, but also of a completely new social order, where women entered the labor market, thus breaking with the classic family patterns. The product Carmen Curlers promised freedom to the women, but it also gave a whole new freedom to the women who were given work in the factory.

Throughout the story of the electric cardboard pilot, we focus on the welfare and consumer society of the 60s, on equal rights, body, gender, dreams and advertising.

Together with the students, we will investigate what this break-up meant for the women, their families and society. We take the personal narratives as our starting point, and examine the history through the sources and dilemma-based role-plays, which give the students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the story and achieve recognition through historical empathy.

With the help of the new understanding of the 60s, the students must work to sell dreams themselves. They must make their own cinema advertisement for other of the great inventions and goods of the 60s, and through this examine what the products said about the times and about the ideals that existed.
