Application

Milk thistle gets its name from a legend that says that the Virgin Mary dropped some drops of breast milk on the plant. The drops became the white markings on the leaves.

Milk thistle has been used as an emetic.

Medically, milk thistle has been shown to have a beneficial effect in the treatment of liver damage. It can be used to detoxify and rebuild the liver, for example in case of poisoning with fly agarics.

The leaves have pointed thorns and, based on the lore of signatures, it turned out that milk thistle has been used to treat side stitches.

In folk medicine, milk thistle is used as an antidote for snakebites and to treat canine rabies. It is also used to treat melancholy, kidney stones and gallstones, and to promote milk production in nursing women.
