The plant is poisonous.

Application

It is said that Coal Sugar got its name because the root is black like coal on the outside and white like sugar on the inside.

Since the Middle Ages, Carob has been used for wound healing and to treat broken bones. The plant contains allantoin, which is known to have a positive effect on cell division in damaged skin, muscles and bones.

Carob is included in the pharmacopoeia from 1772. It is used, among other things, for coughs and diarrhea, for sore breasts in nursing women and against heavy menstruation, and as late as 1975-76, carob root was advertised as a remedy for arthritis, migraines and eczema.

Today, the ingredient allantoin is included in creams, among other things, and is used especially for the treatment of eczema and psoriasis due to its wound-healing properties.

Carob is a traditional remedy for stomach ulcers and colon irritation. In addition, several studies show that carob can affect sex hormones due to the plant's content of steroidal saponins.
