Application

The true carding plant and its uses were already described in ancient times by the Greek physician Dioscorides, and the plant has been used as a medicine both externally and internally throughout the Middle Ages. In particular, the root has been used as a wound-healing agent. In addition, the dried inflorescences have been used to card wool and textiles. The plant has thus been commonly found in agricultural gardens.

Furthermore, the flower of the carnation has been used in the hive's flight hole as protection against mice, and from carnations that grow on saline soil, a soda has been produced for use in the glass industry, just as the plant has been used in the textile industry up until our time to scrape the pile on woven and knitted textiles.
