Application

Bittersweet nightshade is an ancient medicinal plant that was used by monks and witches in the Middle Ages. Externally, the plant was used for skin diseases. Extract of the leaves is approved in the EU as a herbal medicine for mild forms of eczema. The extract is only approved for external use.

Bittersweet nightshade has a euphoric effect if eaten. The red berries look delicate. The taste is sweet at first and then very bitter. It is strongly advised not to eat the berries or any other part of the plant.
