Lecture - HAV, The voice of the sea in Denmark
Klostrstræde 18, 4300 Holbæk
Tour of Denmark's first royal burial church, St. Bendt's Church in Ringsted. Hear about Valdemar the Great and his family and about the dedication of the church in 1170.
At roughly the same time that Knud Lavard, killed in a feud over royal power in 1131, was canonized, St. Bendt's Church dedicated in his honor. Valdemar the Great, son of Knud Lavard, was the builder, and he buried his father in the church. He himself and his family are also buried in the church, in addition to other kings and queens of the Valdemarene family, i.a. Queen Dagmar and Queen Berengaria.
On the tour, we bring the history of the church to life with stories about Ringsted in the period when the church building took shape.
St. Bendts Church has been built since 1170 and has undergone a major restoration after a fire.
At the end of the tour, we visit the church's museum, which stores finds from the royal tombs. See, for example, Queen Berengaria's black braid.
It is necessary to buy a ticket in advance.
