Lecture - HAV, The voice of the sea in Denmark
Klostrstræde 18, 4300 Holbæk
Small and exciting special exhibition at Ringsted Archive
German soldiers occupied Ringsted on the morning of April 9, 1940. They left the city again on May 7, 1945. Somewhat less flashy than when they arrived. Germany had lost its war, and on May 4, 1945, German troops surrendered in Europe and Denmark was free again.
The people of Ringsted lived under special conditions during the occupation. Ringsted Barracks was the regional office for the Schalburg Corps, a Danish branch of the German SS (Hitler's own guard), and the city was also occupied by a large group of German soldiers.
The occupation, the liberation and the resistance struggle against the Germans are the three themes in a small and condensed special exhibition at Ringsted Museum and Archive. The special exhibition provides an insight into the local conditions told with photos and original objects.
Ringsted Archive has a fine collection of privately recorded photos from the occupation period. They are not all of good photo quality - blurred, poorly cropped and overexposed, but they are a unique snapshot.
The exhibition also contains rationing marks, identification cards, hoods for darkening car headlights, plaice skins for shoes, soldiers' helmets and much more from weekdays during the occupation.
