The history of coffee – a scent of culture
The exhibition "Coffee break" invites you on a sensual journey through time, which takes you from the first coffee drink to today's coffee breaks.
Enter a world of stories where the coffee bean reveals its secrets and each cup brings us closer to the history of coffee.
Hear about how coffee in 1600th-century Denmark was reserved for the wealthy few, to how a farmer's wife tried to understand the mysterious drink. Hear about rationing, smuggling and celebration with stories that show how coffee has left its mark on Danes' everyday lives.
Also experience the hard times during times of crisis, when rationing was the order of the day and where even the smallest drops were valued. Dive into the history behind the iconic blue enamel jugs, better known as Madam Blue, which became a symbol of Danish coffee culture.
Enjoy the sight of the beautiful coffee sets from Museum Vestsjælland's rich collection. From fine cups in thin porcelain with gold rims and delicate flower decorations to the everyday cup in more solid materials, - every single part testifies to the love we in Denmark have for coffee.
Come and experience how coffee is not just a drink, but a chapter in our shared cultural heritage. Take a break, taste the history, and let yourself be inspired by the many stories to enjoy a cup of coffee in Christian the IV's inn or in the museum's cozy courtyard.
The exhibition can be seen until 22 December at Sorø Museum i the museum's opening hours.
