Borch's textile Study collection

Borch's textile Study Collection contains 7000 items, which must now be brought to light. On your personal visit to the collection, you can touch the textiles, count threads and take photographs or perhaps simply enjoy the sight of fabrics and decorations. Some of the things are light and breathtaking – maybe even seductive? – while others will probably be able to provoke or surprise you, for example due to color choice or strange shapes.

The collection covers a wide spectrum, as there are examples of both home work and crafts as well as industrial goods and handicrafts. The items draw threads to the international fashion trends of the last 200 years.

At the magazine, for example, name cloths and other pieces of teaching are taken care of, a fine collection of baptism clothes, approx. 1500 crochet patterns as well as Charleston dresses with pearls and much more. And then just over 1000 white collars for women's and girls' dresses. You can also find examples of the fashion of your great-grandmother's time and of the fine embroidered candlesticks from the same time. Or you can see how difficult it was for a schoolgirl in the 1950s to do cross stitch. On the back of the embroidery, the threads clump violently and go in all directions.

The many textiles are not included as museum objects in Holbæk Museum, because the items are not from the Holbæk area and therefore not relevant for the local history museum. The items thus have no so-called provenance. On the other hand, they have been collected over many years and have been used at the museum for demonstrations and communication for both adults and children.

The name Borchs tekstele Study Collection refers to the house – Borchs Handgjerningsskole – where the textiles are stored. Approx. In 1840, the private school was set up in the small yellow half-timbered house in Klostrstræde, and on the front facing the street you can still read the inscription "Borchs Handicraft School" on a beam. The house has for many years been part of the Holbæk Museum.

The items in Borch's textile Study Collection are sorted and stored by Holbæk Museum's Textile Guild, which consists of a volunteer working group.

The special exhibition “Seduced by textiles” is both a presentation and an invitation to you for a private visit to Borch's textile Study Collection. Here you can get access to exactly the type of handicraft that you want to investigate yourself.
