The last Viking ship?Ongoing
Klostrstræde 18, 4300 Holbæk
What does the Danish West Indies actually have to do with West Zealand? The answer is: a lot more than you might think. The lecture is part of the Sorø Historical Festival 2025.
Dive into a fascinating and sometimes overlooked part of Denmark's history when colonial historian Karen Sivebæk Munk from Museum Vestsjælland unfolds the story of the connections between our homeland and the tropical islands of the West Indies.
Did you know, for example, that the food rations of the slaves in the Danish West Indies consisted, among other things, of herring from Kalundborg? Or that people from West Zealand in the 1700th and 1800th centuries traveled to the colonies and returned home with both exotic experiences and dark stories in their luggage?
In this thought-provoking and lively lecture, colonial history is brought right back to us – to Sorø, Kalundborg and the rest of West Zealand. Karen Sivebæk Munk guides us through the personal destinies, the local imprints, the global connections and the shadows that the colonial era still casts today.
Come and learn more – and maybe even be a little surprised.
