City tour – Slagelse in the Viking Age and the Middle Ages

Prospect Slagelse 1755

A walking tour of Slagelse in the Viking Age and the Middle Ages. The city was already known in the 1000th century and has played a central role in Danish history.

Slagelse is one of Denmark's oldest towns, and some of Denmark's first coins were minted here. This was during King Canute the Great's reign from 1018 to 35. The minting took place in Kongsgården in Bredgade. It was also in Slagelse that Queen Margrethe I called a royal assembly at the town square, where her 1-year-old son Oluf II was elected king. An event that has an intricate connection with the largest gold treasure in Danish history, the Slagelse Treasure.

More has happened in Slagelse in the Viking Age and the Middle Ages than is commonly known. Hear about the times and events on a city walk to historic sites.

The city walk is not suitable for people with walking difficulties.

It is necessary to buy a ticket in advance.
