Build, learn and play with a 900-year-old ship

Freja works with wood

Build, learn and play – a Viking boat during the winter holidays. In the boat building at Holbæk Harbour we get tools in our hands, and at Holbæk Museum we see a real Viking ship.

Holbæk is home to one of the newest UNESCO designations for inalienable cultural heritage, the Nordic clinker boat tradition. At the harbor, boat builders still build according to the thousand-year-old traditions, and at Holbæk Museum you can see for the first time ever one of the best preserved examples: the 900-year-old Gislingebåd.

“Oh mom! That sounds boring!” It’s not! The tour is not the classic tour, it’s a tour for both children and adults (with a childlike soul). We get tools in our hands and with sharp tools we build a spare part for the Gislinge boat. So it’s important to have an adult with us.

Finally, we go to the museum to see the real Gislinge boat, which is proof of the Nordic clinker-built tradition. Since it requires axes, knives and concentration, there is only room for eight children per team. Then the adults have to help on the sidelines. Children must be at least eight years old to use the tools.

The tour takes 90 minutes, as our museum inspector starts with you at the Coastal Life Center and takes you through the maritime Holbæk, and we end at the Holbæk Museum, Klosterstræde 18.

It is necessary to buy a ticket in advance.
Max 2 adults per child.
