The significance of the West Indies for West Zealand

Holbæk Museum, Klosterstræde 18, 4300 Holbæk

Bust of David Hamilton Jackson

Tour description:

In 1917, Denmark sold the West Indies to the United States. The exhibition "West Zealand / West Indies" tells about West Zealand's role in Danish colonial history. There are many connections between our old tropical colony in the West Indies - and the West Zealand province. The exhibition tells the overlooked story of how the Danish province was as involved in the Danish colonial interests as the capital. Hear about the many connections that have affected people on both sides of the Atlantic.

Slavery and oppression also have their place in the exhibition. See i.a. a saber used to quell the slave uprising in 1848, photographs of hard-working field workers and shackles used for prisoners - all testimony to a dark chapter in Denmark and West Zealand's history.
