Introduction The Gislingebåden - the last Viking ship?
Holbæk Museum, Klosterstræde 18, 4300 Holbæk
Tour description:
On arrival at Holbæk Museum, there is take-your-own coffee and cake.
The museum's guide tells with pictures the fantastic story of the discovery of the nearly 1000-year-old Gislingebåd and the subsequent archaeological excavation. Hear also about the great work of the archaeologists and conservators in dating and conserving the boat and the process of getting it into the museum.
After that, there is of course time to inspect the beautiful Gislingebåd. Because even though the ship has been buried in sand and earth for almost a thousand years, it is incredibly well preserved and almost intact. Museum visitors can get up close to the 7,5 meter long ship and see its beautiful details. You can clearly see how the ship is built according to the Nordic clinker building technique, a craft method that is on UNESCO's list of inalienable cultural heritage. Both light and sound help make the exhibition a sensual experience.
Option to extend the trip with a visit to Holbæk Harbour
If you want to know more about the tile building technique, you can advantageously extend the visit to Gislingebåden with a guided trip to Holbæk Harbour. Here you can visit the shipyard and boat building, as well as get on board one of the historic ships. We look at the projects that are underway, and you get an introduction to the port and the history of the ships.
Can be advantageously combined with:
a) extended trip to Holbæk Harbor with a focus on the tile construction technique and the exhibition: The man, the vessel and the fjord in the Coastal Life Center.
