The mailbox. One of the most common sights on a bike ride through the city. You never really thought about it because it was always just there. But now it's gone! Or almost.
At Odsherred Museum we have borrowed the red mailbox that used to hang at Algade 31 in Nykøbing. And it works! If you buy a postcard in the shop, you can throw it in the mailbox, you know, just like in the old days! Then we will make sure it arrives – just like in the old days.
Because it all started in the old days. In 1851, the stamp was introduced, and in 1860 the classic red mailboxes arrived. They were allowed to hang there for 165 years. Now they are all gone. So is the stamp.
But in connection with the exhibition of photographer Søren Bay's postcards, we have recreated the entire system.
In Bay's time, postcards worked almost like text messages – you could send and receive a reply the same day if you sent to someone in Odsherred. Things won't be that fast here.
So imagine. Something as banal as sending a postcard has now been turned into a museum.
And many children never get to try it.
That is, unless they come to Odsherred Museum during the summer holidays!
The postcard costs 25 kroner – and we will make sure it arrives. There is free admission for children under 18 years of age – adults pay 50 kroner admission.
