Peter Martensen – Diary from Tasilik

In 2026, Odsherreds Kunstmuseum invites you to a unique experience when we present the special exhibition Diary from Tasilik by Peter Martensen.

A large number of works are gathered here, which are being shown together in one place for the first time. The audience is given a unique opportunity to enter Martensen's sensual and captivating visual universe.

Odsherred holds a special place in Peter Martensen’s artistic work. “Tasilik” is the name of the scenic property in Odsherred, where the artist has had his home and studio since 2010. The name means “by the lake” in Greenlandic, given by polar explorer Knud Rasmussen, who spent time there.

The exhibition is structured as a visual diary, where the audience moves through both large paintings and intimate diary images, which together open up an interaction between the existential and the local. The artist's long-standing practice of diary writing is directly incorporated into the exhibition through texts, reflections and visual diary notes about the creation of the works.

In addition, there is a smaller separate hanging where Peter Martensen has selected works from the Odsherreds Kunstmuseum's permanent collection. Here, the dialogue between the artist's contemporary works and the museum's collection creates new perspectives.

The small open-air studies function both as independent works and as keys to the larger studio works. Together they create a rhythm between the intimate and the universal; between the big questions, the immediate sensation and the concrete ground beneath one's feet.

Martensen himself describes his art as m

singular realist: works that 'appear realistic at first glance, but are actually about something mental'.

Peter Martensen is represented in museums in Sweden, England and France – and now you can finally experience him at Odsherreds Kunstmuseum.
