Lundbye was known for his ability to capture the essence of the Danish landscape. Experience four outstanding examples of his style and vision at Kalundborg Museum.
An artistic and cultural historical treasure
The beloved national romantic painter, Johan Thomas Lundbye (1818-1848), was born and raised close to the Church of Our Lady in Kalundborg, and he found many of his motifs in the area. Four of Lundbye's authentic local motifs have returned to Kalundborg and can now be experienced at Kalundborg Museum. The paintings are not just works of art – they are part of Kalundborg's history and self-understanding.
The works depict, among other things, Møllebakken and Kalundborg Fjord and provide ample opportunity to go on a motif hunt in the local area after visiting the museum.
The significance for Museum Vestsjælland
With 17 works by Lundbye in its current collection, Museum Vestsjælland has a strong connection to the artist's legacy. The new works have great art and cultural historical significance, further contributing to Lundbye's stories about landscapes and life in 1800th-century Kalundborg.
The exhibition can be seen in the museum's opening hours, from February 7 until December 20, 2026.
