The Carmelites in Skælskør

This exhibit is no longer available.
At Skælskør City Museum, you can experience the special exhibition The Carmelites in Skælskør in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. This monastic order came to Skælskør in the 1400th century and built a monastery in Algade, but neither the monastic order nor the monastery managed to last more than about 100 years in the town. The exhibition tells about the belief in heaven and hell in the late Middle Ages, about the Carmelites and their worship of the Virgin Mary and provides an explanation for why the monastery did not survive to posterity. The exhibition features a fine small selection of some of the objects that archaeologists uncovered during the most extensive excavation of the monastery grounds in the winter of 1996.
The exhibition can be seen at Skælskør City Museum during opening hours. Note: free admission.
