The story of the Gislinge boat

A local farmer from Gislinge was digging for a garden pond in 1993 – but suddenly he came across something.
It turned out to be a 900-year-old boat, which is now on display at Holbæk Museum!

Come and hear today's guide tell the fascinating story of the discovery in the field, where the farm owner was digging, and see both pictures and films.

Also hear about the archaeologists' great work in excavating it, and see how the conservators worked to date, preserve, and exhibit it.

Despite almost a thousand years in soil and sand, the boat today appears impressively well-preserved and almost intact.

Afterwards, we enter the exhibition, which is staged with light, video and sound, creating an atmospheric and sensory experience.

The boat is exhibited in the largest display case ever built at Holbæk Museum – a spectacular sight in itself!

Up close to the 7,5-meter-long boat, the beautiful details and special clinker building technique become clearly evident – a Nordic craft tradition that is included on UNESCO's list of inalienable cultural heritage.

The story is free and included in today's admission ticket to the museum.

Registration not necessary.
