KALUNDBORG
MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL August 15 - 17, 2025

On 15 - 17 August

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The smell of bonfires and food spreads in and around Højbyen when we finally and for the sixth time hold the Kalundborg Medieval Festival in 2025!

It will be a blast of a festival, and the square will be teeming with clowns, knights, musicians and traders, and in the many stalls you can find all kinds of delicacies.

Look forward to fantastic fire shows, music and theater and let the children play and be creative in the family area.

All the performers live in the camp by the square, and you are welcome to take a look inside.

Kalundborg Medieval Festival is a historical festival which takes place right where major important events took place in the Middle Ages - namely in and near Højbyen in Kalundborg.

The festival was first held in 2015 and has only grown in size since then. The last festival was held in 2023, where around 5.000 happy guests passed by.

Kalundborg Middelalderfestival is a collaboration between Museum Vestsjælland, Kalundborg Municipality, group of priests and parish council at Our Lady's Church, local associations, businesses, voluntary and charitable institutions and the local press

YOU CAN EXPERIENCE THAT AT THE KALUNDBORG MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL

VALDEMARS WORKSHOP

The festival is a hit with children – in our family area, which we call Valdemar's Workshop, the whole family can play and be creative!

For example, try making your own sword, painting a shield, making beaded necklaces, beaded bracelets, leather purses or trying different braiding techniques. You can also play fun games or try walking on stilts.

Or have a pillow fight on the balance beam – who can push the other one down?

Finally, we will hold two puppet workshops with Jane Hyldgaard, who can also be experienced with her fantastic puppet theater.

Kings and queens – the theme for this year's festival

Kalundborg's history is full of kings, queens and great times. Since the city was founded in 1167, it has been closely connected to the center of power. Esbern Snare, the city's founder, grew up in a circle of powerful figures such as Bishop Absalon and King Valdemar the Great. This close relationship with the crown laid the foundation for Kalundborg's flourishing in the Middle Ages – both economically and politically.

The royal connection never disappeared. Throughout history, the city played an important role – from Queen Margrethe I, who united the Nordic countries, to the establishment of Denmark's first national archives.

This year's festival pays tribute to this proud heritage. We celebrate kings, queens and Kalundborg's importance to medieval Denmark - a story of power, visions and a strong kingdom. Come and join us as we bring the past to life!
