Digital resources

Here we bring you a list of websites with maps and orthophotos that can be used for reconnaissance from the desktop, supplement your own observations in the field or as a source of administrative information about the land you walk on. Observations from here can be a great help in the search for new locations.

List of digital resources

DIME

DIME stands for "Digitale Metaldetektorfund" and is a digital platform for recording archaeological finds made by private individuals. It is used by thousands of amateur archaeologists in collaboration with most of the archaeological museums in Denmark and functions as a digital collection with over 200.000 finds.

Monuments and Antiquities:
The Palaces and Culture Agency's public registrant and map of ancient monuments in Denmark. Here you can find information about protected ancient monuments, settlements, individual finds and many other categories of archeologically interesting places. If you use GIS, you can also download most of the information for use in your own maps.

Historical maps online:
The Danish Geodata Agency's portal for locating historical maps. The cards are scanned in high resolution and can also be downloaded as needed. A number of older economic maps contain information on grading, place names and cultivation at the time the maps were made. This information is usually of great use in historical studies, e.g. high quality far from the villages is usually a sign of former settlement.

Other useful pages:

Denmark seen from the air:
The Royal Library's digitization of historical aerial photos of farms, industry, villages, etc. from the 1930s onwards. Useful for investigating previous activities at a specific location, but in itself also a collection of fantastic images of Denmark in a now bygone era.
