Museum Vestsjælland archaeologists are currently digging at Tømmerup outside Kalundborg – just south of Holbækvejen.

Here they have found an unusually beautiful road course – only the very foundation of the road remains.

Pebbles and gravel have been placed between the large stones to level the road surface. On the right side of the road there is probably a wheel track – this can be seen by the stones being pushed out to each side.

The road was closed in the late 1700th century or early 1800th century in connection with the establishment of the current Holbækvej.

The road is several hundred years old and archaeologists believe that horse-drawn carriages used to travel here to and from Kalundborg. This tells us that land transport to and from Kalundborg has been important for several centuries.

The road has now been examined and covered again – the area will be used in connection with the establishment of the new Kalundborg Motorway.
